NEW ROMANS
V. The End Is ETC.

THE END IS ETC.
Here we come with last night’s touched-up make-up
And last night’s misunderstood mistakes
The Receiving Line don’t mean a thing when no one’s behind that camera anyway
Who ever cares what happens after that picture got taken?
It’s just frame-after-frame like memory
At least we all got to touch the hem of the red carpet just like anyone
Just like anyone who’s anyone who’s anyone
Just like anyone who’s anyone who’s anybody

The night never ends if you stay in the dark
You showed up crying to the After Party
Don’t you know it’s all over, all over?

We will talk talk talk
And we will be understood
We will get what we’re owed even if it’s no good
We paid to get in so we will watch it burn
The Academy circled the dance floor with their notebooks in hand
They’re comparing tonight to all the other ones
They’re filing their reports behind your back
It’s your history they’re taking
What a Tradition they’re naming…

The night never ends if you stay in the dark
You showed up crying to the After Party
Don’t you know it’s all over, all over?

Agents in the stairwell just watching people
Who know they’re being watched
Like 300,000,000 little personality cults
Everybody’s back, everybody
They’re so sure they’re supposed to be
Looking at the door to see who else is showing
The push & pull of everyone holding their breath
You could cut it with a knife just to put it to rest
The push & pull of everyone holding their breath
You could cut it with a knife just to put it to rest

The night never ends if you stay in the dark
You showed up crying to the After Party
Don’t you know it’s all over, all over?
Don’t you know it’s all over, all over?
Don’t you know it’s all over, all over?
It’s all over, it’s all over…

I am not young and I have no money and I am not in love

Clang-clang and we rattle our chains and we rattle our chains
Clang-clang and we rattle our chains and we rattle our chains
Clang-clang and we rattle our chains and we rattle our chains
That’s the sound that’s the sound of dragging a Shame

Dance-dance-dance-dancing like you’re kicking dirt from an open grave
Dance-dance-dance-dancing like you’re kicking dirt from an open grave
Dance-dance-dance-dancing like you’re kicking dirt from an open grave
Dance-dance-dance-dancing like you’re kicking dirt from an open grave

I’ll see you tomorrow night
And the next night and the next night and the next night
I’ll see you tomorrow night
And the next night and the next night and the next night
I’ll see you tomorrow night
And the next night and the next night and the next night
I’ll see you tomorrow night
And the next night and the next night and the next night
And the next night and the next night and the next night
And the next night and the next night and the next night
And the next night and the next night and the next night
And the next night and the next night and the next night
And the next night and the next night and the next night
And the next night and the next night and the next night
And the next night and the next night and the next night
And the next night and the next night and the next night
And the next night and the next night and the next night
And the next night and the next night and the next night
And the next night and the next night and the next night
And the next night and the next night and the next night
And the next night and the next night and the next night
And the next night and the next night and the next night
And the next night and the next night and the next night

NEW ROMANS II
We’ve seen too many nights like this
How could we live if we didn’t forget some of them?
We don’t know who we were trying to convince
When we said we’d go through with this
I don’t miss anything
Just time
I don’t miss anything
Just time

The New Romans never know when their time is up
The New Romans never know when their time is up
The New Romans never know when their time is up
The New Romans never know when their time is up

That trashy pout you picked up from the TV set
All high-gloss and carefully studied impression
You could’ve been pointing that thing at anybody
Not just me
Pillow talk with bedroom eyes all used up at the party
You tried on one look too many
Now it’s tossed-off cold comfort
Goodnight

The New Romans never know when their time is up
The New Romans never know when their time is up
The New Romans never know when their time is up
The New Romans never know when their time is up
I wonder if they ever will

Now, going to sleep
I can’t shake the feeling that you’re watching me
It never felt like that before, not to me
Once you get to this place, there’s no mouthpiece left
To tell you what to do next

I’m tired of hearing the things I’m supposed to know by now
I don’t want to be anything but perfect to just you
Just you, still

I was going through the motions
Because I believed in them
Of course I did

OK, better vocal, still roughly the same rough-sounding home-made demo. Be swayed, sway towards me.

NEW ROMANS I
You’re not even sure who you put that show on for
Or if it’s gotten any worse than it used to be
A 1/2-lie’s not the same thing as the truth
No matter what they say
No matter what they say
No matter what they say

Architecture dictates how you move
Through the kitchen to the back bedroom
Where the kid is 1/2-awake
The TV’s always on
The beds are all unmade
I hang my coat in the hall closet just like
Just like always
Just like always

The storm lines at the bottom of my coffee cup
I can’t believe this air-tight trope is where we got stuck
You still repeat history no matter what you knew or not
Everything’s an arms race of one kind or another
Whether it’s guns or smart little remarks after dinner
There’s no peace accord to sign when it’s just
One victim against another
One victim against another

And we’re more and more like that all of the time
You’re like a sitting portrait-study
Who got up one day and left my picture frame
You said, “I know exactly what you mean, no matter what you think”
I know exactly what you mean

I don’t know when this life became ours
But when we were out tonight
Oh, when we were out tonight
I don’t know when this life became our life
But when we were out tonight
Oh, when we were out tonight

This isn’t the same thing as the truth
No matter what they say, no matter what they say, no matter what they say
I don’t miss anything just, just time, just time
This isn’t the same thing as the truth
No matter what they say, no matter what they say, no matter what they say
I don’t miss anything just, just time, just time

The new Romans never know when their time is up
When their time is up, when their time is up
The new Romans still don’t know when their time is up
When their time is up, when their time is up
The new Romans never know when their time is up
When their time is up, when their time is up.

THE END IS ETC.

THE SADNESS OF THE HUMAN HEAD
I. DISEASE (0’00”)
II. PUSH OUT, FOREVER (0’29”)
III. RETALIATION (3’16”)
IV. QUESTIONS / THE BODY ECSTATIC (4’14”)
V. WAVE ROLLS BACK IN (8’34”)
VI. REPRISE, FOREVER (10’13”)

SO, it occurs to me that I never told you what happened to AUTUMN RHYTHM.

The short and unsatisfying answer is: The documentary was shut-down due to the kind of human weakness and sickness that has always kept people from getting much done together.

"Say no more." "I can say no more."

We’re still arguing over footage and rights and all that… so either the film is in a protracted limbo or it’s never going to be made.  And after all the struggle over a project that was supposed to be so simple, it kind of ruined the idea for my aunt.

But, as for reheated-cold-comfort, this song still exists, and I’m glad I had a reason to make it, for her, and for the film about her that will never be.

SO, here’s the latest in a long line of soundtracks for films that don’t exist.  Enjoy.
